New Canon aims to center the queer trans experience in the traditional art history canon of large-scale oil paintings. To focus the paintings on the individuals themselves rather than one aspect of their identity, each of the five models chose their clothing, props, location, and pose to represent themselves. Each painting was modeled after a 17th-19th century domestic interior portrait, however the vibrancy of colors and the strong gaze of each figure eludes to a new kind of canon, a breath of painting that encompasses people and experiences rarely featured before.
